Game Report: Cardinals 3, Phillies 1
By Rob Rains
The Cardinals scored all of their runs in the third inning Thursday night and went on to complete a sweep of the three-game series against the Phillies at Busch Stadium.
Here is how the game broke down:
At the plate:
The Cardinals bunched four of their five hits in the game in the third, a single by Pete Kozma, an RBI single by Matt Carpenter, a triple by Jon Jay and an RBI single by Matt Adams … The team’s only other hit in the game was a fourth inning single by Shane Robinson, as the Phillies retired the final 15 hitters in a row … Allen Craig went 0-for-3 with a walk, snapping his nine-game hitting streak. .. Carpenter’s RBI was his 18th of the month, despite hitting in the leadoff spot. The only two NL players with more RBIs this month are Brandon Phillips of the Reds and Jayson Werth of the Nationals, each with 20.
On the mound:
Lance Lynn pitched seven innings, allowing only five hits and one run, to improve his record to 12-5. He had won only one of his previous five starts, allowing 21 earned runs in 30 innings… Lynn did issue four walks, but retired nine of the last 10 hitters he faced, starting three double plays himself. According to Tim Trokey of Fox Sports Midwest, Lynn was the first Cardinals pitcher to be involved in three double plays in a game since Willard Schmidt on Aug, 23, 1955 … Lynn's total of 118 pitches was his second highest of the season ... After Trevor Rosenthal pitched a scoreless eighth, Edward Mujica did the same in the ninth, earning his 30th save, tying the injured Jason Grilli of the Pirates for the league lead.
Once again the Cardinals won without hitting a home run. According to researcher Tom Orf, the Cardinals are now 26-24 this season in games in which they did not hit a home run after winning only 25 games all last season in which they did not homer.. Orf also said this is only the second time since 1991 the Cardinals have won four consecutive games without hitting a home run, having also done that in 2007 and 2010 … This also marked the first homestand of six or more games in which the Cardinals failed to hit a home run since 2007 … They have now gone 211 at-bats in those six games without a homer and have hit just one in their last 362 at-bats, covering the last 10 games … Cardinal pitchers also did not allow a home run in any of the six games, a streak of 54 consecutive innings. The last time they had that long a streak was 2011.
It was the first time the Cardinals have swept the Phillies in a three-game series at home since 2001. The Cardinals never trailed in any of the three games … Eight of the nine players in the Cardinals lineup were drafted and developed by the organization. The lone exception was David Freese, who was acquired in a trade from the Padres while playing in the minor leagues … Manager Mike Matheny said Joe Kelly will start Saturday’s game against the Braves … With the trading deadline approaching on Wednesday, the Cardinals had scouts at Jake Peavy’s start for the White Sox and also at reliever Brian Wilson’s audition for teams in Los Angeles … Matt Holliday, whose wife gave birth to their fourth child on Wednesday night, was scheduled to accompany the team to Atlanta following Thursday night’s game. He is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Saturday… Tyler Lyons made a strong audition for the open start in Tuesday’s doubleheader in Pittsburgh Thursday night at Memphis. He pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits, in beating Round Rock. Two of his four strikeouts were against Manny Ramirez. Since being sent back to Memphis last month, Lyons is 4-0 in six starts with a 1.33 ERA… The Cardinals are now a season-high 25 games over .500 (62-37).
: The Cardinals begin a 10-day, 11-game trip to Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati on Friday night with the first of three games against the Braves. Adam Wainwright (13-5, 2.44 ERA) will start the opener for the Cardinals against Mike Minor (9-5, 2.88 ERA). Following the three games in Atlanta, the Cardinals will play five in Pittsburgh and three against the Reds before returning home.
